Sunday: The Shropshire Union Canal is an impressive civil engineering undertaking with deep cuttings, massive embankments, generally wide and a line which is more often than not straight or with very gentle curves as if built for a speed in excess of 4 mph. The towpath, however, particulary in the cuttings is almost impasible with deep mud in places, and the evidence of the much talked of vegetation management which we indeed saw on the Grand Union, was lacking, so much so that the width of the canal was sometimes reduced to half. Today we reached Market Drayton and faced the trek into town for provisions. No canalside supermarkets on this canal!
