I wonder if there are design standards for visitor moorings? On our recent excursion to Llangollen we came across this visitor mooring by chance. It is outside the Poacher's Pocket pub and has obviously been lovingly upgraded by some organisation to provide a smooth surface with mooring rings. The contractors havn't even shovelled their unwanted rubbish into the canal because the moorings can accommodate our 25 inches draught with no problem. However there is one problem here and it is GRIT. In wet weather particularly, grit gets on your shoes, gets ground into the paintwork on the boat counter and ruins the interior floor. Given that this surface represents a cost effective result for the most part and generally offers good drainage, is there anything that can be done to alleviate the problem I have described? Well, most moorings have a grass verge between the canal and the path and this is very effective at limiting the problem. In fact this is so common that one could almost conclude that there is a standard for this work which clearly in the example shown above has not been adhered to.
