Well it became evident later yesterday evening that there was a leak under the toilet after all the effort yesterday to partially dismantle and restore the “works” to remove a plastic toy. So the dismantling and restoring was repeated, after overnight brain activity. What could be done differently? Conversation with our boat's neighbour suggested that a thin smear of Vaseline should be used when re-fixing soft rubbery parts to hard parts using screw clips. This made sense. As the metal strip circling the join is tightened up the metal will move over the plastic and if the interface is sticky (I.e. no Vaseline) the soft part might pucker up creating a leak. If the interface is not sticky, then the metal strip will give an even pressure - no leak. As a second point, I had experienced difficulty in the confined space using the screwdriver, so maybe the rings were just not tight enough. This time I used a baby socket instead of the screwdriver. With experience the whole job was very much faster than before, but just as much water on the floor in spite of every effort to keep it to the minimum!!!
Swapping out the cooker/hob
This has been in planning for a month or more. The old one was rusting and the oven and hob spark ignition had failed. Clearly if fitting a replacement the ideal would be not having to do a major galley rebuild. An internet search found nothing suitable, but visiting a major chandler dealing principally with Narrowboats we were shown the specifically engineered replacement for us. Sure the oven is a little smaller that the old, but the body of the oven fits perfectly. It took just 4 screws to remove the old one, after disconnecting the gas bottles, shutting all the valves and disconnecting the hoses. We now await the arrival of an appropriate LPG boat certified gas engineer to install it
